Unable to Open File

I have downloaded the VideoPad demo; however, when I attempt to import a .mov file (92 mb) from my desktop I receive an error message that says "Unable to open file"

I searched the help files but could not find a solution.

Any help is appreciated before I purchase the software key.

Can you play the file in other programs? It could be that you don't have the right codec.

What camera did the mov file come from?

I use a Kodak Zi6 camera.

It would appear you are correct about the codec. I noticed the older .MOV movies I have stored on my desktop don't have a file association after I uninstalled Kodak's MediaImpression software.

I downloaded Prism Video Coverter, converted the .MOV file to a .avi file and that worked fine in the editor. Is the correct codec available either with our without purchasing the registration key for VideoPad?

Seems strange that Prism can deal with it and VideoPad can't ..? :blink:

MediaInfo ( http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaInfo ) is a handy util to figure out precisely what codec bitstream is within a file.

MOV files are usually associated with Apple Quicktime, so you could try installing the free Quicktime viewer and see if that puts the right codec onto the PC so that viewers and editors can make sense of it.

See http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and don't forget to untick the spammy options!

Reinstalled QT, so now my .MOV files have an association. Still won't load in VideoPad.

Downloaded the codec pack. Video still won't load in VideoPad and when I tried to watch it in Windows Media Player I got the audio but no video.

Read the review, especially the part about the poor video quality. I had already been thinking about returning the camera and going with the Zi8 or the Flip because of the better quality.

Good idea to trade up if you can, life's too short to mess around with poor quality if that's what you reckon

It's a personal choice... no offence intended but I can't say I'm that impressed by the sample http://www.vimeo.com/1564492 which is a bit wobbly from 'rolling shutter'.

However, does the Zi8 still use the same codec?

I downloaded a 7MB 8sec sample clip from http://blog.rfquerin.org/2009/04/12/the-kodak-zi6-sample-videos-and-thoughts/

and it plays OK in VLC player, Media Player Classic, QuickTime 7.6 but not Windows Media Player. And, like you, I can't get it to load in VideoPad either! While it appeared to convert in Prism the resulting file was too small and won't play. And it crashes VirtualDub. MPEG Streamclip plays it.

VideoGSpot says it's 'avc1 ' 'H.264 ' and pressing the test button it won't play (MP4 Splitter --> ffdShow).

First time I've had trouble with anything H.264

In the absence of a codec for the Ambarella flavour of AVC that could Make It So with VideoPad, you'll be stuck with converting to another format first.

I am having the same problem trying to add an .avi file; it almost instantly quits with the cryptic message: "Could not open file". I can play this .avi file on windows media player. Videopad will load other .avi's just fine. this particular file is large, 4.1 gig, but that should not matter, right?

Needless to say, this is a real problem, as i'm in the middle of a project and i need to add this video.

On holiday at the moment but if you look through somw of my earlier posts i have mentioned a free converter program that seems to work ok for most formats. I also supplied a link. It may be what you are looking for.
