4.16 won't load dss files

After reading all the postings on this subject, I'm amazed how many people are experiencing this problem. I am fairly new to Express Scribe. Have only been using it for a little over a month. I've been using it fine at home, I think version 4.05, and using .dss files just fine. I went on vacation and tried installing it on my parents computer. I started with version 4.01 and went up from there. None of the versions would play my .dss files. It shows the file in Express Scribe as far as the name of the file, that it's a dictation file for Express Scribe, shows the date dictated and the time, but no duration time and won't work even if I use the controls through Express Scribe. It's very frustrating and I'm not sure if I'm dealing with a problem through Express Scribe or something going on with the computer I'm using. I sounds like a lot of people are having this problem, but it doesn't sound like there's a quick fix at the moment. Are there any new ideas? Thanks.

I had to reinstall due to a Vista crash. The 4.16 version showed "ZERO DURATION" and wouldn't play my dss files. I tried the suggested 4.15 version, but same thing. Then I tried the 4.05 suggestion (from http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/index.html choose "primary"). PHEW! It didn't play at first, but then I remembered to also download the component "dss32.exe" from http://www.nch.com.au/components/index.html. It is better than ever!

hmmm I was very happy when I found this topic, but after trying the link I still have the same problems: I get the 4.17 download from the link. Can somebody please help me get the 4.05 version? I've got a lot of people who use .dss files so a player that works with that would be great!

P.S.: and 4.05 also works via rdp / rdc / terminal server with an serial footpedal. Very, very, very good!

I am having the same exact problem, I thought I was doing something wrong as I have never used this software before. But the administrator message on this board, he/she wrote that on November 6th and said it would be fixed ASAP. It is now over two months later, what the heck?!? I can't get any of the versions I download to work and I need to type so I can make some money. Please help faster!!!

I just downloaded 4.17, and tested some new dictation, I can get it on my c drive

4.17 doesn't work on my sister's XP Dell, either. No dice on .05.

Guys, please be aware that the DSS issue has indeed been fixed! If you cannot play your DSS files it's because they're corrupt or something, which is what's happening in critters case. Try getting the DSS files again from your source, or alternatively request they use a more robust audio format.

The dss files from an Olympus digital recorder work fine on my desktop and fine on my daughter's laptop, however, I still come up with 0 content on my laptop. I have unstalled and reinstalled different versions, installed the extra component and still come up with 0 content. Please advise what else can be done.

Well, I appreciate the thought, but I think you're wrong here. Getting new DSS files didn't help, and the new program can play the old ones.

My recorder is an Olympus DS50.

Version 4.17 of Express Scribe will play my dss files.

HOWEVER, they can only be of a certain duration. If the sound file is short, say an hour, it loads just fine. If you load a file that is five hours long, it cuts off the last 20 or 30 minutes of the sound file.

I have replicated this time and time again for my scopist.

I have played the same files in Windows Media Player and the files play all the way through to the end.

I have loaded the files in Gear Player (another dss player) and the files play just fine.

The problem is with Express Scribe unfortunately.

This is incorrect. ES cannot play my DSS files, which were sent to NCH for testing. The file was not corrupted in any way, and NCH was able to load/play it correctly. Since I am not the only user experiencing this problem, there must be some kind of ongoing issue with ES and DSS files even though the last version was supposed to have fixed it. I am continuing to rely on my Olympus software to transcribe my DSS files since they are proprietary to it anyhow.

As far as requesting a different audio format, please be advised that as transcriptionists, we are at the mercy of whatever equipment is used for dictation. We have no control over the type of audio file received, which is why we would like to rely on ExpressScribe since it purports to support a wide range of formats. Unfortunately that is not the case and we must rely on other transcription software for DSS files. I would highly recommend NCH continue to address DSS file problems rather than simply dismiss them as they did in this forum post, since it is obvious that there is a ongoing problem judging by the persistent postings here concerning this.

I agree with everyone else that the problem is not fixed, I have seen this on at least 10 other machines. Uninstalling and reinstalling worked for one of them - so there are still 9 that I know of that do not play dss files.

Just double checking, are you all running the latest version of Express Scribe? (Download the installer on our site now and use this.) Have you tried installing an older version before this "DSS issue" started occurring? Results?

Be aware that Olympus have recently changed their DSS format, which is why problems started occurring in the first place. Try loading an old DSS file you have and see if you have any success with this.
