Help please - error saving a file

Hi, Can anyone help me. I just edited a file and saved it as 44100khz 8 bit mono, instead of 16 bit mono. (I really do not understand any of this!)

Is there any way I can resolve this problem as now my file, which took a long time to record, sounds very crackly and is quite useless.

Open it up with WavePad and try some of the noise removal methods, however it is difficult changing a "quite useless" file into something productive.
