how can I get bit streams of 0's and 1's?

I don't have any experience with things related to sound. And I want to simulate Spread Spectrum modulation techniques and if there is any easy means to encode sound in to bit streams of 1's and 0's, suggest me,,,,, I only want to care about simulating the modulation techniques, DS and FH.
