Batch Convertor down-conversion uses more space

Hello,

I am using the batch converter (in Wavepad v 1.2) to apply an automatic gain adjustment and then saving an mp3 file which is almost always at a lower quality than the original file. The individual converted files themselves are smaller than the original files, however, overall, I have less hardrive space than when I started. What is causing this? With all of these down conversions, should I not gain space? (Granted there were a few input files that were equal to or less than the quality of the output files, but I emphasize these were just a few exceptions.) I have tried rebooting the computer but this did not seem to resolve the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

The batch converter is likely creating new files instead of overwriting the old ones, so now you have two copies of the same track which is why you end up with less hard drive space.

I have Wavepad's convertor set to overwrite the existing file. Other than the few files which were in different formats before conversions, there do not seem to be any duplicate files.
