converting a wma file

I'm trying to convert a 'wma' file to a 'wav' file and keep getting this message

for any 'wma' file that I choose as input:

THE FILE COULD NOT BE OPENED

I thought I read copy-protected files will produce this message. If so, how can

I tell my files are copy-protected to assure that really is the problem?

"If the files won't work, then they are probably copy-protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM). You can check for DRM protection by loading the file into Windows Media Player and then looking under the license tab in the file's Properties; when the content is protected there will be a message to this effect."
