I have used Golden Records to create digital recordings of old cassette tapes. I notice that on some of the tapes, that there is some physical damage to the tape such that when it plays I get a screeching noise coming from the tape deck. The same screeching noise makes its way onto the digital file and it is the same noise on multiple tapes. Other than the screeching noise, the songs on the digital file are fine. I'm trying to figure out how to filter this noise out with WavePad - Click/Pop doesn't address the issue. Any thoughts?
There is one possibility that comes to mind here. WavePad contains a low-pass frequency filter which, if you are not familiar with this sort of thing, cuts out frequencies above a certain so-called "cutoff frequency". Hence, if the screech lies predominantly above a certain frequency (and I believe that it does, since I have occasionally heard such a thing on some of my cassette tapes), and if the screech frequencies are higher than the significant content of the audio material on the tape (is it music?), you might find some compromise filter cutoff point which, when set, will attenuate much of the screech without severely affecting the content of the material which you have recorded. Try experimenting with this and see what happens. Look in the help file for instructions on the use of a low-pass filter.
Another possibility is the use of a "notch" (or V) filter, which can be set to attenuate frequencies within a certain range. Again, if you experiment, you may discover that the screech lies predominantly in a particular frequency range. If this range is sufficiently narrow, you may be able to attenuate the screech without too severely affecting the audio content of the recorded material. WavePad has an excellent flexibility in setting up such a notch filter. Again, read the instructions and play around with this.
Other than this, I can't think of any possibilities.
