How to get subtitles to work

Hi everyone! I've been trying to add a subtitle file to my project and so far have not been successful.

First, I click "Add File(s)" from the main menu and select an srt file.

When I do this I get the Subtitles dialog box. I can see that the file is parsed properly and I select "Main Channel" as the Subtitle Channel. I then click the "Apply" button.

After this, I can see the subtitles in the Sequence Preview and verify the subtitles and audio are in sync.

I then click "Export Video" from the main menu.

I export as an MP4 file. For Subtitles, it doesn't matter if I pick "Overlay" or "Hide subtitle", either way produces a MP4 file without any subtitles. My goal is to have the subtitles so they can be selected if wanted instead of on all the time.

Thoughts why this isn't working?

It's working here in 18.23 (64).

If exported as an overlay, the subs are burned in - no way to turn them off. If exported as hidden, no subtitles will appear on the exported file.

To have the player decide which, export the subs to a SRT or SSA file, then import that into a video player along with the video.

The MPC-BE player for example allows viewers to disable or enable the titles.
