The Normalisation Function

Hi Folks,

Really appreciate any help with this one.

Using a slightly older version of the software, 10.26.

The Scenario:

I have several dozen ripped tracks that I would like to add to a playlist, but I would like them all to be at the same playback volume.

The approach I have been taken is to use ‘Batch’- Normalize- save tracks in the required format.

However the results have been very mixed.

Some tracks still with a significantly loud playback level than others, (there is no tool such as iTunes sound level in play etc to distort further).

is there a better way to approach this that would give much better results but that a novice like me can understand?

There are a number of auto and manual options under the Normalize toolbar button. Click the caret at the right.

And test the Auto Gain button function as well. Click on advanced and try tweaking compressor settings.

These settings aren't batching, however.

When using Tools > Batch > Normalize click on the Normalize choice to access the drop-down menu. Test the various options...

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it. I’m going to have a pop with the auto gain initially, see how that works out and will revert!

Didn’t find the auto gain function that great. It’s as if it badly distorts the files and it sounds as if there is significant “clipping” on some of the playback.

Going to play around with the normalization function settings, the general consensus seems to be that this is the most reliable way but it’s not full proof.

I think in truth there is no perfect way to achieve what I want to due to the fact that tracks are constructed in many different ways and have many parameters.

Method 1: Using the Amplify Tool (Most Common)

Select a portion of the audio .
Go to the Effects tab and select Amplify .
In the dialog, you can adjust the gain and create fade-in/fade-out effects within that selection.
To create a "graph" feel, you can apply different amplification percentages to different sections consecutively to manually ride the volume .

Method 2: Using the Compressor Tool (Graphic Interface)

Go to the Levels or Effects tab and choose Compressor .
Switch to the Graphic tab in the compressor dialog.
This displays a graph where you can click on the curve to add black square dots (keyframe vertices) to create custom volume curves .
Drag these vertices up or down to adjust the output volume at different points .

Method 3: Direct Editing (Waveform)

According to recent user documentation, you can double-click a track to reveal its waveform and create, move, or delete keyframes (squares) directly to modify the curve .

Note: For the most effective volume editing without damaging quality, it is recommended to work on copies of your audio files, as excessive amplification can cause clipping."

Really appreciate all the help folks, I finally found a method that works best for me and I can use in bulk format:

Bulk: Normalisation

Settings for Normalisation: Set for "Peak Loudness RMS" and set the Normalisation Peak level to around -14db),

Appears to work very well, much better than all the other methods i tried.....
