When I have edited an image, and want to save it as a .ppp file, the Save AS dialogue changes the filename to 'date-myname'. Is there a way to get it to default to the root name of the original image, with the .ppp extension?

eg if I am editing 'Garden.jpg' I would like the default save as to be 'Garden.ppp' not '2025-08-04-username.ppp'??

Thanks - I've filed a suggestion, but not sure how responsive NCH are?

In the meantime, is there anywhere that I can copy and paste the original filename from??! (I really don't want to have to type in 25-long character descriptions by hand for hundreds of files! - and there would be hunderds of typos, I'm suer..)

I have a lot of images open, and the filenames at the top of the edit screen are truncated (eg "2025 Spain Mad...") and in the info panel on the right the filename text is not selectable? If I could copy it from somewhere within photopad, then I could simply replace photopads date-username name with the original (+.ppp)

"Based on available documentation, NCH PhotoPad does not provide a built-in way to directly copy the full filename from the info panel, as that text is not selectable and the interface truncates long filenames on the tab bar. The Edit menu's Copy functions only apply to image content or overlay text, not metadata or filenames.

If you need the precise original filename for renaming project files (e.g., to append ".ppp"), here are your practical options:

Hover for Tooltip (if available): Sometimes, hovering your mouse over the truncated filename at the top tab shows a tooltip with the full filename. However, this is for viewing only and cannot be directly copied.
Use the Operating System:
- Right-click the file in your file browser (Windows Explorer, Finder, etc.) and use "Copy as path" (Windows) or "Get Info"/"Copy" to grab the full filename before or after opening it in PhotoPad.
- You can then paste this wherever you need in PhotoPad dialogs (e.g., "Save As") to ensure consistency.
Manual Re-Entry: When saving a project, manually refer to the visible part of the name or your file browser and type it in the "Save As" dialog. There is no evidence in the help PDFs or reviews of metadata copying within PhotoPad.

Thanks - copying the filename before editing the file will work when editing one file at a time, but not if editing 50 or 60 at a time...

I like the photo editing functions of photopad, but the workflow seems to suck. I used to use Canon DPP 4, but it has started to corrupt images and reinstalling didn't seem to work. Photopad also has some simpler-to-use tools, but not a lot of use if I can't get a decent and usable workflow...

You can usually force the editor to keep the original root name by saving once with your preferred filename, then reopening the .ppp file; from that point on, it should stick. For batch jobs where I need cleaner names, I run everything through renamer.io afterward, since it lets me tweak prefixes and extensions without messing with the original files.
