Run Express Accounts online?

MenzshedPW

Is it possible to run Express Accounts online?

If not can the database be held online somewhere eg Dropbox or a shared Google drive.

As the Treasurer of a club I want to be able easily to hand over the reins to someone else in the event this is necessary.

Currently everything is on my PC with regular backups to Google Drive.

In an ideal world I would run totally on the web. I thought I saw that this could be done but I can't find the reference to this now.

I would appreciate some thoughts.

Thanks....Derrick

The AI take...

"Yes, it is possible to run NCH Express Accounts with online access through its Web Access feature, but it does not operate as a fully cloud-hosted SaaS service; it relies on a local installation acting as a mini web server that allows browser-based remote access from other devices or locations.

Web Access Feature

Web Access Setup: Express Accounts includes a feature enabling web interface access. After configuring the software on a host computer, other users can connect via a browser, either on a local network or across the internet, provided proper network and firewall settings are applied.

Functionality: Almost all core functions are available from the web interface, such as entering transactions, generating invoices, and managing accounts, similar to desktop access.

Limitations: The host computer must be powered on and running Express Accounts to provide online access. It’s not a typical cloud deployment—data is stored and processed locally on the host machine.

Storage on Online Drives

Dropbox/Google Drive: Express Accounts does not support directly running its database from cloud drives like Dropbox or Google Drive. While it is technically possible to back up, restore, or synchronize Express Accounts data files to online storage for safekeeping or transfer, attempting to run live databases from these services is strongly discouraged, as file locking and corruption can occur.

Recommended Usage: These online drives are suitable for backup or transfer purposes, not for everyday live database hosting. Always use built-in backup and restore features for safety.

Key Points

Web Access provides remote and online browser-based usage, but not cloud-native operation.

Data files should not be stored live on Dropbox or Google Drive for direct use; only use these for backups.

Express Accounts is primarily designed as desktop software, but web interface options enable remote working when properly configured."

Borate,
I have two computers Desktop and Laptop, I need to host on one (desktop) and connect other (laptop).
Is there an updated instructional video of this? Tried it in the past, was confused by setup and connecting?
Thank you!!!!!!!

NCH lists this FAQ...

How do I set up Web Access?

Web Access allows Express Accounts to be accessible to multiple users in different locations.

Setting up web access

Click the Options button on the toolbar
Select Web Access from the list on the left
Select the check box for one or both of the following options
- Allow access to Express Accounts on the local network
- Allow access to Express Accounts from the internet (Cloud Access)
We recommend checking the box for Turn Web Access on when this computer is running
In the Web Accounts section, click the Add... button
Enter the information for each user
Give each user the web access address from the Browser Access section
e.g. http://192.168.1.100:96
Give each user the password you created for them when setting up their User Account
Click OK to save your changes and close the window
