Layer goes all black, computer crashes

I'm a new user so it's altogether possible I am somehow the problem, but I have tried (and tried and tried) to make a drawing from a photograph by adding a layer over the photo image. I get about 30 minutes into it and the software suddenly freezes, then the entire imaging area goes black and all controls (mouse and stylus) stop responding. Any diagnostic ideas, or settings I should look at?
