How To Schedule A Recurring Transaction With Splits

Hello - I have a number of transactions that require the use of splits. I have no issue creating a transaction with a split, but cannot locate how to schedule a transaction with splits though. To be clear - I am looking how to have a transaction scheduled with numerous splits part of the scheduled item, not how to edit and manually add the splits after the scheduled transaction is recorded. As split charges are fairly common in business transactions, I am assuming I have just missed how to do this.

It appears that MoneyLine lacks that feature. Put your query to NCH support.

Thanks for the response, and it was what I feared. Definitely makes the application much less usable. Interestingly, there is a post in these forms from 2014 where it is noted that scheduling a split transaction was an upcoming feature. Obviously something changed in the intervening decade.

Thanks again for the quick response. I did file the suggestion. Hopefully this is something that actually happens as split transactions are used very commonly, especially for tax purposes.

At the moment, MoneyLine does not support splitting scheduled transactions. We understand how useful this feature would be, especially for business users, and we’ve forwarded your suggestion to our development team for future consideration.

Updating for anyone that reviews the forums researching the ability to schedule split transactions. Moneyline support confirmed there is not a current plan to implement scheduled split transactions. That is unfortunate and suspect there are many like me that will give up on the application as a result. As recommended, I put in a request for this feature but as this has been a reported for at least a decade I am doubtful it will ever occur.

I anticipate many walk away when this lack is discovered without a support ticket, nor posting in the forums or putting in a formal request. If I am right, this means the number requesting the feature to NCH may appear small but potentially ends up losing many potential users - especially business customers. It is easy for a non-programmer to say something appears simple, but as scheduled and split transactions both already exist having the ability to schedule a split seems more a modification than something brand new and would greatly increase functionality.

My recommendation is that anyone finding this thread and desiring this feature should reach out to support. Split transactions exist, scheduled transactions exist but scheduled split transactions do not. Very odd for a business focused financial application.

For anyone checking this thread for an update, here is the latest.

Split transactions in general require a paid instance of MoneyLine (previously was in the free edition as well).
If you had split transactions in a prior free version of MoneyLine you no longer have the ability to view or edit the old transaction splits.
Scheduled Split Transactions are still not available, though support seems to be using some wordsmithing when asked about it (see info below).

On a semi-regular basis, I contact MoneyLine support regarding the ability to have a scheduled transaction with splits. The most recent time led to the following:

ME: "I am checking on when split transactions will be available for recurring/scheduled transactions."

Response: "The ability to use split transactions in conjunction with scheduled transactions is a feature included in the Professional Edition of MoneyLine. This edition provides unrestricted use of the software, including advanced features such as scheduled transactions, split transactions, and budget management."

My confirmation (along with a second question): "To make sure I am correctly understanding: the MoneyLine Personal Finance Software Home License includes the ability to have scheduled/recurring transactions with split categories, correct?"

Response: "Yes on both accounts."

Based on this I purchased a license and the first thing I did was setup a transaction with splits, then used it to make a scheduled transaction. As was the case when I tested the 'free' edition (which previously included splits), the scheduled transaction shows 'Not Categorized' and there is no option for split transactions. When I replied to support with this information, I was given directions how to manually enter the split information in the scheduled transaction. I noted this was not a scheduled transaction with splits, which is what I was told is now included in the 'Pro' edition and received the following:

Response: "I would like to clarify that the split and schedule functions are indeed two separate features available in the Pro version of our software. However, it is important to note that these features cannot be combined. This means that while you can create scheduled transactions and you can also split transactions, it is not possible to split a transaction that has been scheduled."

I have now spent a couple weeks trying to get a promised refund since the software does not perform the function I was told it did.

Really crazy how a 'Pro' financial management tool cannot handle a scheduled transaction that includes split categories. Categorization is key for financial management and requiring manual entry for recurring transactions is a huge lack.

After a few weeks of back and forth, I have been provided a refund for the Pro edition as result of Pro not allowing scheduled split transactions.

I continue to be surprised a business focused financial application cannot handle a scheduled transaction with splits. Entering 10-15 splits for a recurring transaction is quite a time-consuming task in MoneyLine which would not be too bad if you only needed to do it once. Dealing with taxes, fees, benefits and more require the use of splits for accurate accounting meaning this is a large gap in functionality.

I could even accept using copy/paste of a prior transaction with splits, though it appears there is no ability to copy/paste a transaction. 🤷‍♂️

MoneyLine is really close to being a great application, though it is the last few things that leave it being mediocre.
