Sometimes I can get it to erase no problem other times I get the checker board when i run over the pic but I can't figure out how to delete the checker board removal. thank you

It is unclear what you result you're looking for when you say "run over the pic?"

The checkerboard is the transparent area, where lower track content will be seen. It cannot be removed.

This when overlaid on the background lower track results in this

I have the same question. Let me explain my issue. When using the ERASE tool the results of the erased area is a checkerboard. I would like to simply have a WHITE background or the ability to change it to white?

In Videopad a transparent PNG image placed can be placed on a track that's higher than the background. Then the BG will be visible in the transparent (checkerboard) area.

That background can be any color, image or video. In Videopad it might be a white Blank Clip, as chosen from the toolbar.
