Overlays changing video contrast

Hello, I've been trying to edit some video clip overlays onto clips recorded on my playstation 5 and been having some color issues. If I add the PS5 clip and save it out as a mp4, H264 with high quality setting it looks fine. But after adding an overlay in of a youtube clip recorded using OBS screen recorder it suddenly becomes too bright and loses its saturation when saved despite the export video settings being the same. I've tried virtually every format with no impact. Any idea why adding an overlay is causing this and how it might be fixed? Thank you.

Has the Opacity effect been inadvertently applied to the overlay?

What version of Videopad is in use? Look at the bottom-left corner of the window.

Upload both the original file and the overlay file and someone here will take a look.

Upload to a free server, such as Google Drive or MS OneDrive, right-click the link and Share or Copy. Copy the result and paste it here or to me in a Private Message via the mail envelope in the top-right corner of this forum. When using Google Drive, click SHARE | SHARE and change "restricted" to "anyone with link can view.**

I appreciate the help, thank you. No effects currently in place on the overlay other than a scale adjustment. I am using v16.57 the newest version. Here is a short clipped version of the larger video and the overlay. I was trying to create a series of overlays for the larger video. I have done so with videopad in the past for ps4 files with no issues but ps5 has a different format with webm. I manually converted the file to an mp4 so videopad can read it but for some reason adding these overlays seems to be messing with the color contrast and brightness.

Crop the overlay, which appears to be out of sync. That can be corrected by unlink the audio from video and slipping one or the other slightly.

Expand the timeline, if necessary, using the slider at the bottom-right of the window.

You mean the audio in the overlay is out of sync? How would that impact the color and brightness on the main clip? I might be misunderstanding.

The audio is a different issue.

The insert doesn't have a transparent background, so this is essentially a cropped picture-in-picture effect.

The image really has lost its saturation and became too bright if you compare to the original screenshot I posted. There is almost like a white haze over all of it. This is the same issue I was having. The characters skin color looks much lighter. Saving without the overlay it looks normal but for some reason adding the overlay is causing this color and brightness change.

The issue is evident now. It wasn't before because the original mp4 in VP preview and the export looked the same.

The problem isn't with the overlay. There's something about the mp4 encoding that causes loss of contrast, and this is seen in several editing programs.

For the fix, that file was captured, then overlaid with a sync-corrected and cropped insert.

What do you mean by the file was captured? Am I understanding correctly the color/brightness fix is to screen record the game file and apply the overlay to that? I had tried that with OBS screen recorder but you might be using a different method.

Yes, the mp4 was captured with a screen recorder, then brought into Videopad. It then looked fine.

The overlay, which had been sync-corrected, was applied and the project was exported.

You might test that method with Debut. Perhaps there are OBS settings that can be tweaked to avoid the issue?

Appreciate the help Borate. My concern is that I have many hours of footage. Having to manually record over each one would be quite time consuming. The video in videopad saves out fine when no overlays are applied. Somehow adding the overlay in seems to change something. I suspect HDR is somehow involved in the process.

Export as Lossless. No contrast change. Or...

Apply the Color Boost effect at 50% to the main clip. It's slow, but appears to enchance contrast.

Or test these... Faster export than Color Boost. Play with the settings.
