Split Clip problems !!

I am new to VideoPad and am having a problem saving a split clip from a long piece of film.

I can set the start time and then the end time-when I try and create that clip the instruction is to 'place the cursor between the IN and OUT markers to split the clip'. Unfortunately when I hit the split clip command this has the effect of changing the end point of the clip to another earlier time. Even placing the cursor exactly at the end point does not allow the split clip to function.

There must be a simple operation to split a clip and save it as the desired length!!??

If the clip is in the bin (at the top-left), move the red cursor in the preview window to the desired start point. Click the Set Start button.

Move the cursor to the desired end and click the Set End button.

Then click the caret to the right of the ADD button (under the PV window) and choose where the trimmed clip will be added to the timeline...

It can be further positioned by dragging it on the timeline.

If the clip is already on the timeline, position the cursor at the desired start point and click the scissors or click Split button...

Do the same for the desired end point. Now a new clip has been created between those two splits. It can be deleted if desired.

If you make a mistake, click <ctrl-Z> (same as Edit menu | UNDO) to go back, step-by-step.

THANKS- However...This above process produces the same instruction as previously in the timeline - 'place the cursor between the IN and OUT markers in to use the split tool'. This is preventing me from making the split exactly where I want. OK, I can move the cursor fractionally to go inside the start and end points to use the clip tool. I can then export that clip, but when I piece these exported clips together later in a DVD with thumbnails for each they can't run together smoothly surely and fractional gaps will produce a stilted look because I have lost a few frames from the original ?

Back to basics. I want to use VideoPad to divide a long concert film into clips for each song. Then I can assemble those clips in a DVD creator so each song is a chapter with a thumbnail. The DVD creator I use will not do this working from a continuous film, hence the point of using Videopad-or am I missing something obvious?

Once a clip is isolated, with the IN and OUT splits, the remainder of content can be deleted. The clip will be precisely the content that you isolated.

Splits occur at the exact location of the cursor at that time.

Once this is done, slide the remaining clip to the far left or right-click in the black gap and CLOSE GAP so the clip is at the left. Here's the routine...

The sequence can be exported. The result will be a single clip - just as you trimmed it - no extra black.

Then you can load each exported clip, singly, into your DVD creator.

I don't want or need to delete the remainder of the content. I just want to save the clip exactly as I created using the selected in and out points. And what happens when the cursor is on the end point and I go to SPLIT I get this message :-

"Position the cursor between In point and Out point to use the Split tool"

BUT....if you re-position the cursor between the markers it automatically moves the split point and the saved clip is shorter than I want.There are ways around this but it just double the editing time.

I'd send a screenshot of this message if it was possible.

If you don't want to split out a clip, then delete the balance and export, alternatively copy | paste the split clip to a new sequence (via right-clicks).

Export that new sequence. If using the split and delete method, deleted portions can be restored with <ctrl-Z> or by reloading the saved project.

A split is never moved. To more precisely split, expand the timeline with the slider at the right-bottom of the window.

The split clip process is flawed.

You have not addressed the problem or instructed on how to split a clip of the length desired without having to re-position the cursor between start and end points, the process of which leads to a truncated clip.

Link a video of what you are doing. Splitting clips is a straightforward process...

Place cursor at start. Split. Place cursor at end. Split. The content between the two splits is a new clip.

If the new clip is clicked between the splits, it will be selected. But that does not create another split or truncate the clip, as shown here...

No...I am using VideoPad 16.38 on a Mac running High Sierra.

To split a film using the Split Tool you do not do the above. You set a start point, then an end point. Then hit Split. Then the fun starts.....

If splitting a clip in the BIN (top-left), use the SET START/END procedure, then click the ADD button to place that clip at the start of the timeline, as described above.

Don't position the red cursor to start and end points, and then click SPLIT.

Move the red cursor to the start point, and immediately click split to create the split at that point. Then move the cursor to the end point and click split.

Wherever the cursor is parked when SPLIT is clicked, THAT'S where the split will be. The area between the two split points is the new clip.

If splitting isn't working this way then there's either a misunderstanding or a fault with VP. Install this English Mac release. Ignore any virus warnings.

Post a video that demonstrates what's being done.

If you are referring to this message...

then you are incorrectly creating a BIN clip split.

Select the clip in the bin. Move cursor under the preview window to the in point, click SET IN.

Move the cursor to the out point and click SET OUT. The areas outside of the IN/OUT points will be darkened, as above. The Split button isn't used.

And alternative is to drag the Red and Blue brackets under the preview window...

After the clip has been trimmed in this manner, click the ADD button (or the caret at its right) to drop the clip onto the timeline.

To share your screenshot you must right-click the Drive file, click SHARE | SHARE and change "restricted" to "anyone with link can view."

Well thanks for all your help. Call me stupid but when the Videopad instructions state CLICK SPLIT UNDER THE CLIP PREVIEW window (see that copied below) then that's what I expected to work, and not throw up the instruction about moving the cursor and have to go through another process (ie placing clip in sequence). But now I have done that - and I have selected the clip (or sequence if you prefer) and right-clicked to export it. Simple ? it is when you know how !

Split a Video (or Remove Segments from the Middle of a Clip)

Click the clip in the Timeline panel to open the video up in Clip Preview.
Play the video or drag the red cursor to the point in the clip you want to split the video (or remove).
Click Split under the Clip Preview window. The clip is now split into two segments in the Timeline.

An accurate instruction, correct for splitting the clip into TWO segments, but that's not what you wanted to do.

Your best approach may be to import the concert to the bin and drop it onto the timeline.

Select a song by splitting its IN and OUT points.

Delete all content before and after the song. Export.

Back in the project window, press <ctrl-Z> (or the Mac equivalent of EDIT | UNDO) repeatedly until the entire concert is restored.

Repeat for the next song.

I realised today that would be the way to go in future.

All your help appreciated - Problem SOLVED !

As it's a free trial version I'm hoping that it won't suddenly become unusable-as I'm using it for personal projects.
