Add an effect like transition to start of a clip

Is there any way to add an effect, other than a Fade In, more like a transition, to the start of a clip that doesn't have a preceeding clip?

I can do it if I add a blank clip before it, but can I do it without that step, or is Fade In the only option?

Click the FX on the clip, to open the effects dialog.

Choose the effect, and make sure that the animation graph is showing.

Plot keyframes at the start of the clip. Here's an example using CROP for the first half-second or so...

Thanks, Borate. I've tried that but I have to customise keyframes for each clip as the action time is related to the length of the clip. So the longer the clip the slower the action. To make the action at the start the same for all clips I have to fiddle the timing of each keyframe. That becomes a bit fiddly.

Let's say that your effect is three-seconds long. Plot it, then save it to an effect chain via this icon on the effects toolbar...

Then, split any length clip at three-seconds.

Apply the saved chain effect to only the leading, newly split-out clip.

The effect be exactly the same, no matter what the actual length of the clip.
