Slow encoding on bigger sources

I'm using version 11.38. When I recently do projects with bigger source files, like 1080p with slightly over 20000kbps, exporting to 25000kbps, the speed of export is very low, with also very low CPU utilization. The same situation happened to me before when I use a high res picture in the video. The whole export process will be slowed down significantly with very low cpu usage.

Also, picking 25000kbps as export brought back the effect of the first few frames being blurry. Plus it doesn't allow me to key in custom kbps now.

Which codec: H264 or H265? Manual settings can be made here in version 11.38...

Testing here has shown that H265 will be considerably slower than H264 mp4 and use less GPU.

A five-minute project, with 4K source files, exported in 4:28 with 64-bit 11.38 using H264 @ 1080 / default quality. No blur at the head.

Submit a project that demonstrates your issues. Just follow these steps closely...

Back up --- With your project on the timeline, click on MENU at the top-left. Click FILE|BACK UP PROJECT FILES TO FOLDER. Choose a folder and SELECT FOLDER.
Upload --- Use a free server - Google Drive, MS OneDrive, etc.* - to upload the saved, numbered FOLDER. Do NOT upload the individual VPJ or export file.
Get link --- Get a public link. If using Google Drive click GET SHAREABLE LINK. If necessary change "restricted" to "anyone with the link can view"
Share --- Click COPY LINK | DONE. Paste that link here, or click the folder at the top-right of this forum to message it privately to me. It won't be shared.

* Before uploading, right-click the folder, click PROPERTIES. Look at the File Size to confirm that it's not too big for the free space on the server.

I am using H264. Yes I know H265 will be even slower. LOL....

It was pretty acceptable when I used lower bit rate sources, or lower res pictures. The CPU utilization can go up to 90%+ and made the videos ok fast.

But once I started using higher res stuff, CPU seems to be in lazy mode.

Edited to add: I can key in custom bit rate now. I have to just input the number, not "kbps". LOL.

I ended up having to go back to former versions to have reasonable export speed / CPU usage. 🙁

Upload a sample project. Indicate the export codec and bitrate.

I'm pretty sure you can't replicate the problem due to hardware difference maybe, or OS difference, since my export does not involve any GPU usage either (editing does use GPU). Anyway, H264, 27700 bit rate on video and 192 bit rate on audio.

I don't have enough space in my google drive for uploading. 🙁 And I can't get MS Onedrive's confirmation email to reach my email.

Anyway, I recorded the situation to share with you. I know it ain't of much help but at least have a look.

Ran a 4K comparison on a one-minute mp4 project using 25000kbps, H264, 45fps. The result...

Version 11.38 - 4:51

Version 11.22 - 4:46

Essentially the same ... and those numbers might be slightly changed on subsequent runs.

There's no 11.21; perhaps a beta test, and it's best to ignore those.

Don't be overly concerned with the GPU readout. Different files, different formats, different machines --- different handling. Go with overall performance.

yeah, guess most people won't have my issue. Right now my best option is staying with 11.32, where GPU is used for editing, and output is fast. 😃

Whatever works best for you. The latest isn't always the greatest.

V11.32 wasn't available, but ran a 4K, 25000kbps test with 11.34 (32) on the same project. It finished in 4:52, with similar GPU/CPU activity to 11.38.
