Crop video and export to the exact size

I thank you for the further explanation, but is it clear to you that a huge series of steps and attempts are needed to obtain a banal result? When two clicks are enough to obtain the same result with other software?
This is what I struggle to understand about this whole discussion: Am I stupid because I want a banal result with little effort without going crazy with settings, filters, crops and scale? 🙂

Then if the answer is "For us it is right that you take an hour of tests and attempts to get a banality" we are fine.

Don't spot a complexity here. Simply ZOOM to the area desired, optionally choose an aspect ratio ... and export.

There's even a 'preview' option in the zoom configuration box.

We are doing our best! 🙂 But, not particularly clear on what you mean by banality. (something so lacking in originality as to be obvious and boring.:mellow🙂

OK...You have a clip (or image) loaded to the timeline. It is a bog standard 16:9 clip that fills the frame. (1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720 etc.)..........

What do you want to do with it? Please explain your steps and what you hope to end up with.

At the very least a zoom effect (a single effect) will achieve all (or most) of what you seem to want.I don't think one step is a huge number🙂

I just solved this after getting some ideas from this thread. I agree though, it should be much more straight forward - crop and zoom to cropped area.

Zoom on the area you want to keep for the final clip (obviously!)
Using the original clip resolution, apply the percentage zoom you selected for each dimension to the pixels i.e. if your original clip is 1280x720 and you're wanting a cropped video of say 45%,0%,90%,100%, then the start pixel of the horizontal is 45% x 1280 and the end pixel of the horizontal is 90% x 1280. That puts your crop in the horizontal position between pixels 576 and 1152.
Export the clip with the final pixel sizes as determined by your crop percentages and calculations with the restraint ('Widescreen fit' in the export dialogue box) to STRETCH. In this example that's 1152-576=576 for the horizontal and 720 for the vertical. But remember that the top left pixel is 0,0, not the bottom left.

For a cropped area to be superimposed over a background, use CROP. Add SCALE or POSITION effects if desired.

Experiment with one of the many A/R Transform drop-down menu presets. .

For a cropped area that fills the frame use ZOOM.

I see I'm sharing other users' frustration with the inability to crop. I've seen multiple suggestions of using zoom as a workaround, but I don't see how that can work for me. I have a 1920x1080 video and I want to maintain the height and just remove the sides so the final product is 960x1080. This is a non-standard aspect ratio, but it's what I need, and a black matte on this video keeping it at 1920 is NOT usable. Is there any way to get this result in VideoPad?

I was able to do the majority of my editing in VideoPad and then use VideoProc Converter to get the result I wanted, so I know this end result is technically possible. It would, of course, be preferable to perform all edits in the same software, especially in the editor I've already purchased.

OK.....Here it is on Track 1.....

OK..... 960 x 1080 is an AR of 0.8 or approx (4:5)

So, add a Crop effect of AR 4:5 (it's on the list of crops) and set the X2 value to 80 (0.8 of 100% width which centres the cropped area)

Result is a video 960 x 1080. Unless you want to squash it you HAVE to lose the side areas.

I've tried nearly every example and I end up with some skewed video or no change at all. I have a video that is much taller than needed and the video is centered in the form. I don't know the dimensions and I have not seen how to get them. Like the other person, I want to crop and save ONLY the crop portion and I do NOT know the dimensions. I'm a noob here, ok? So how do I do that? In Paint.Net I can see the image size and automatically resize to crop. I see no such feature here so how in blazes to I accomplish the same task?

I figured it out. I had to zoom it then place it on the video track. I didn't realize that the crop was on the preview only and what's on the track is what gets saved. Then exported it in a 720p using Zoom and the app handled the ratio itself. I suppose I could have selected 1080 HP, but I wanted to upload the video and 720p is a smaller... anyway, that worked.

ZOOM will fill the frame. It can be applied to the bin clip, then dropped onto the timeline. Or the clip can be dropped first, then ZOOM applied, which will not affect the original in the bin.

As you have discovered, Crop and Zoom during export can also be useful.

This may not be the most elegant solution, but I was facing the same problem as you. I solved it by Cropping the original video, and exporting as is. I opened the video in an image editor to figure out the dimensions of the space I wanted to keep. Once I'd noted those, I used the Scale effect to move my cropped image to the centre of the project, and exported the video to the cropped video dimensions that I'd calculated with Photoshop set to 'Crop and Zoom.'

I am bumping this because it is 2025 and the feature still seems to be missing and based on previous conversation it seemed that the staff was confused about what the author wanted to achieve.

To clarify, this is what the author of this topic was looking for:

Load up a video file of a certain aspect ratio, say 1080p
Define a crop area in pixels in whatever location they want on the video, for example a 500p x 500p square in the middle
Press a button to apply that crop and have the ENTIRE PROJECT convert to 500x500 resolution so that they can simply export their 500x500 video of just the area that they marked

And yes, this is one of the basics of video editing and it has always baffled me that it's missing from this software, so consider my vote added to the pile for this to become a thing.

Make a screen grab of your 16x9 original and one of the desired result - by whatever means it's created. Post those here.

Upload the file/s to a free server, such as Google Drive or MS OneDrive, right-click the link and Share or Copy. Copy the result and paste it here or to me in a Private Message via the mail envelope in the top-right corner of this forum. When using Google Drive, click SHARE | SHARE and change "restricted" to "anyone with link can view.**

Totally Agree with this.

What I have seen is that all video Effects are in percentage of the ENTIRE PROJECT Video Size
possible solutions:

Allow configuration of Effects to be measured in Pixels or percentages.
Allow changing the project resolution. (or at least visualize the project resolution )

I initially bought videoPad as a simple video editing tool. But now, after years of using it, I realized that the software is a semi-professional-grade product. Making these simple changes will make a competitive professional tool.
