To prevent a track from being changed, lock it - using the lock icon at the left of the track.
If audio and video and linked, as is usual with video clips, first right-click either the audio or video track and UNlink them.
Use FILE|SAVE AS to update your project with a unique # or name as you progress, so it will be easy to reload it if necessary.
