When I export my file to avi - the image pixelates badly whenever there is any white or bright light in the image.
It sounds like the quality setting in codec settings was low. This can be changed from Encoder Options when you export.
Also some clips appear in a different aspect ratio even though they were the same size on the sequence time line...
Is your preview aspect ratio the same as your export aspect ratio?
