Converting From .DOC to .TXT

When converting from .DOC to .TXT, the program necessarily puts a Byte Order Mark, (BOM) at the beginning of the file. Is there a was to have this conversion as straight ASCII rather than UTF-8 without embedding the BOM. It shows up as "ï»¿", which is undesirable.
